What is mamajuana?

Mamajuana is much more than an alcoholic beverage: it is a national symbol, a traditional remedy and a living legacy of Dominican culture. This mixture of roots, herbs, rum, wine and honey has been part of the daily life of the Dominican people for centuries, both in celebrations and in medicinal rituals.

A bit of history

Its origins date back to the Tainos, the original inhabitants of the island, who already used herbal infusions for healing purposes. With colonization, European ingredients such as wine and rum were integrated, creating mamajuana as we know it today.


What is in mamajuana? Main ingredients

The recipe varies slightly by region or family, but generally includes:

Roots and bark

  • Brazil stick
  • Expensive Bojuco
  • Canelilla
  • Anamú

Herbs and spices

  • Sweet cloves
  • Cinnamon
  • Star anise

Liquids

  • Dark rum (the main base)
  • Red wine (adds acidity and aroma)
  • Honey (to balance flavors)

How is it prepared?

The preparation of mamajuana is as special as its flavor. These are the most common steps:

  1. Vessel curingThe dried roots are placed in a bottle and cured with white rum to eliminate bitterness and activate its properties.
  2. First macerationPour rum, red wine and honey over the roots (usual proportion: 50% rum, 25% wine, 25% honey).
  3. RestThe mixture is left to macerate for at least one week, but ideally 2-4 weeks for a stronger flavor.
  4. Consume and refillThe bottle can be refilled several times, as the roots retain their properties for months.
